From the recording In The Afterlife Of Promises

The adult son is haunted by a night he can’t admit to, eaten up by guilt and the fear that if his lover knew the truth, it would destroy whatever fragile home they’ve built together. Behind the motel rooms, rear-view mirrors and steamed-up windows, the song becomes a confession of a man who feels like a temporary “road line” in someone’s life, begging for a sign before his secrecy and self-loathing push love away for good. I think this song may have something to do with an experience from a long time ago that I very professionally buried under several layers of denial. I promise I’ll dig it up again in the third part of my little biography.

Lyrics

I may be nothing more than a temporary road line to you
Just a fading stripe you cross before you’re onto something new
I still remember when your laughter filled this cheap motel
Now every echo in the hallway knows about our private hell

I watch you drifting like the taillights in the rain
Leaving all my better judgments stranded in your lane

And now I’m waiting for another clue
Oh, my hands get wet when I think of you
What would you do when you’d found out
Of the place where I spent the night

I keep replaying all the small collisions in my head
Every almost-spoken sentence, every silence in our bed
You said I worry like a saint who’s halfway gone
Praying for forgiveness with the television on

I draw your outline in the fog upon the glass
Watching all our better versions flicker, fade, and pass

And I’m so scared I’m gonna kill my self too
If you’d react like I would do
I hold my breath and hide the truth from you
Gimme some sign that will lead me back to you

Maybe I’m just lines on a road you’ll cross and then forget
A flicker in your rear-view made of hunger and regret
But if you feel me in the mirror when the room is almost dark
Know I tried to be a home for you and not just a passing spark

Suffering makes us quiet, love, it turns us into stone
While strangers on a screen keep telling us we’re not alone

And now I’m waiting for another clue
Oh, my hands get wet when I think of you
What would you do when you’d found out
Of the place where I spent the night

And I’m so scared I’m gonna kill my self too
If you’d react like I would do
I hold my breath and hide the truth from you
Gimme some sign that will lead me back to you

I should have paid more attention to the road and not the sign
But you’re painted on my memory like a temporary road line

In the fog upon the glass
